Life Insurance Question?

About 2months ago my son, his mother, step father, sister ped away in a car accident. A few weeks after the funeral services I received a phone call from the step fathers aunt and she explained to me that the step father had a life insurance policy and that since i was the next of kin for my son that I would be receiving a part of the insurance payout. She told me that since none of the beneficiaries (my son, his mother, and his sister) were living, the insurance payout would be divided evenly between the families of the next of kin. She asked for my address ( i live in a different state) and said i would be receiving some paperwork in the mail to look over and sign and what not. It has been a while since she contacted me and I havent received anything in the mail. I contacted her and asked about it and she said I still should be receiving the paperwork but she didnt know exactly when. It has been a while since that time i contacted her and still I have not received anything. My question is if anyone knows what may be holding up the paperwork from getting to me? It doesnt make sense to me that she would tell me all that and ask for my address if the paperwork wasnt going to be sent some time soon after. Is it possible she could be messing with me. I lost my son and really dont care about the money, Im just curious if possibly she is playing some kind of sick joke on me due to bad blood between me and my son's mother.
