Can I stain cedar that I had previously applied Thompsons water sealer to?

Deck chairs, put thompsons on them about three months ago, now I think I want to stain them and varnish them. Will the stain hold/absorb/work with the thompsons already on there? Or should I just deal with the color as is, and varnish over them?
