Does anybody know this video game?

I remember this video game from when I was a kid that was really weird and scary to me. I remember you played as this boy running in a 3-D world I think, but as a side scroller, it should have been made around the 90's because I remember playing it around when I was 5 so like 1997. But this game was really scary to me because it had these crazy demons and stuff that if you let touch you, would eat you, it was a pretty gruesome game because you would see these demons full on eat this kid your playing as. I remember you had to like try to survive and escape from this hell, and at one point you had to swim or run in between these things that were like fly eater plants and if you got caught in one it would eat you and you would like see it crunching you. It was a really weird game and I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me the name of it.
